Nerja, what's all the fuss about?
We have had that mysterious connection with Nerja for over 20 years. What is it that is so special about this small village in southern Spain that has us hooked?
Honestly? I have no clue...
Not long after we landed, all those years ago, I met a man who told me "once one discovers Nerja, they will find it hard not to return" Yeah, right I thought, but humoured him anyway. Wasn't there a huge world out there waiting to be seen? So why on earth would anybody keep returning to the same town year in, year out?
How wrong was I? Fast forward 23 years, and here we are, living and working in this ever returning place.
Each year we bump into the very same folks we first met all those years ago. Those friendly, familiar faces, that keep returning, albeit that wee bit older, but still they return. Some accompanied with children, who have grown up with Nerja, so familiar it has become a second home and some, dare I say it, with grandchildren, who are staring out on their very own Nerja journey.
These families return year after year, some own their properties and some rent, but still they return...
So, what's all the fuss about?
Could it be the stunning background of the Sierras that surround and protect our special little place? Or could it be that feeling of giddy delight when we arrive and take that first, of many, joyous walks to the Balcon de Europa? or could it just simply be the warm, friendly welcome we receive each time?
Me? I still can't put my finger on it, and sometimes find it quite hard to explain to someone who has never been.
But to those of us who have, well, what I can say is, "once one discovers Nerja, they will find it hard not to return".
I guess that man I met all those years ago was right...
